Changes at the community centre: why we removed the original shrubs and what’s next

You may have noticed that we have recently removed the long-standing juniper bushes near the community centre. We realise that, at first glance, this may seem like the ‘destruction of greenery’ – which is why we want to explain why this has happened and what our plans are for the future.
The original junipers were no longer serving the area or the people well, so we intend to replace them with new plantings that will be more functional, more aesthetically pleasing and safer.

Why did we remove the shrubs?
• The shrubs were over-mature; at first glance they appeared green, but inside they were often dry and gradually dying off; such growth cannot simply be restored and its condition continues to deteriorate.
• Rubbish had accumulated inside them, and the site had been used inappropriately for a long time•
Junipers are also carriers of fungal diseases, such as pear

rust What will take their place?
• New planting combining perennials and low-growing shrubs that will not obstruct views of Svatá Hora nor cast a shadow over the listed cultural centre building (species to be planted include, for example, dogwood, spindle tree, lilac, geraniums and chickweeds; in autumn, bulbs will be added to provide a spring display)
• The proposed species of shrubs and perennials are hardy and do not require further
watering once established• The area will be more colourful and
welcoming• the varied planting will also support insects and overall
biodiversity• in the long term, maintenance should be more efficient than with the original vegetation

. What will change for you?
• In the first few months, the area will look ‘empty’ – this is
normal• Over the course of the season, the plants will gradually begin to grow and
flower• Gradually, a new green space will emerge here, one that better reflects the significance of this location

What’s happening right now?
• The removed shrubs are being taken away, along with the rubbish that has accumulated over the years beneath the inaccessible shrubs•
Next week, the stumps will be removed and work will begin on preparing the soil for the new plantings•
Shrubs and perennials will be planted during April
• Over the course of the season, the new plants will gradually grow and come into bloom
