The green space in front of the community centre is set to be transformed
The green areas in front of the community centre are overgrown with juniper; pruning them results in unsightly scrub. This vegetation will be removed and replaced with new shrubbery, underplanted with perennials.
Apart from the mature trees, the strip of greenery in front of the cultural centre is largely overgrown with juniper. The junipers have been here for many years and have spread over a large area, encroaching on the paths and the space around the benches. When they are pruned – to remove dry branches or those encroaching on the pavements – unsightly dry stumps are left behind.
“The cultural centre itself, as well as its surroundings, deserves to be maintained. Work has been ongoing at the cultural centre for several years now, primarily through the modernisation of individual facilities – by which I mean the modernisation of the cinema auditorium, the construction of a lift, the refurbishment of the main stage and the ongoing modernisation of the small stage. Repairs have also begun on the outdoor area, where we are currently working on the restoration of the terrace. The surrounding area also deserves the same attention. The ageing junipers have become unsightly following pruning to improve their health; moreover, this has opened up a view beneath the bushes, which many residents use as rubbish bins or temporary shelters. “Given that this is a very busy area with cultural significance, the shrubs will be removed and replaced with new shrubs, underplanted with perennials,” says Mayor Jan Konvalinka.
So what can we expect in the coming days in front of the cultural centre? Following a felling permit issued by the Department of the Environment, the aforementioned junipers in the green belt beneath the cultural centre will be removed. New vegetation will then be planted – in addition to new shrubs, beds of perennials will also be planted in the area.
