More than 100 litres of water per square metre

More than 100 litres of rain fell per square metre in Příbram over two weekend afternoons

Last weekend, the Příbram area was repeatedly hit by severe thunderstorms, accompanied by hail in some places. The town is currently assessing the damage caused by Saturday’s and Sunday’s storms, which brought heavy rainfall.

Fallen trees, flooded buildings, damaged pavements and roads, and closures of hazardous areas – this is the initial assessment following the weekend’s storms.

“Příbram experienced truly torrential downpours at the weekend, with a total of over 100 litres of rain per square metre falling over the two days, which has had a significant impact on the damage we are currently assessing. We were on standby all weekend and out in the field,” says Mayor Jan Konvalinka by way of introduction, adding: “The total rainfall over the weekend alone accounts for roughly one-sixth of the total rainfall for the whole of 2025, which is a truly enormous amount of water that the sewerage system is unable to cope with.”

The town is currently being cleaned up and damage repair work is continuing; the town’s various departments and organisations worked intensively on this throughout the weekend. Efforts are underway to dry out buildings, assess the necessary repairs to buildings and roads, clear fallen branches and remove damaged trees. At present, access to and through certain streets is restricted due to the damage. On Zahradnická Street, the pavement is being repaved; on Nádražní Street, work is underway to stabilise a collapsed slope, and on Čs. armády Street, the pavement is closed and traffic on the road is partially restricted due to undercutting and a landslide. 

“Today we held an emergency meeting with all relevant departments, representatives of the City Police and Technical Services to assess the damage and, above all, to set out the procedure for the necessary repair work. All municipal departments were already involved in clearing up the damage at the weekend, so the worst is now behind us. At the same time, we are gradually receiving reports from all our organisations, schools, nurseries, the city’s sports facilities and, for example, the Centre for Social and Health Services. We are recording all the damage and gradually totalling it up. Damage has also been reported from the Příbram swimming pool, where water damaged the machinery room, and from the sewage treatment plant,” says Mayor Konvalinka, adding that thanks are due to all units of the Integrated Rescue System (IZS). 

The town of Příbram is situated in distinctly hilly terrain, which, during torrential rain, leads to localised flooding, as is the case, for example, on Hailova Street. “The area on Hailova Street is, in effect, one big basin into which water flows all the way from Spartak. Even the best sewerage system cannot cope with the volume of rainfall we experienced in Příbram at the weekend,” added Mayor Konvalinka.
