Christmas trees won’t end up in the tip, but will be used as wood chips and compost

The city’s technical services have already reported that the first Christmas trees have been collected. So let’s remind ourselves of the rules on what to do with your Christmas tree once you’ve taken down the decorations.

Christmas is over and households are slowly starting to take down their Christmas trees. Unless you have an artificial tree, which can be stored in the cellar or a cupboard, the question arises – where should you put it? The answer is simple – Christmas trees belong in mixed waste bins, from where the City’s Technical Services will collect them and take them to the composting plant. However, to ensure the trees can be used for composting or chipping, a few basic rules must be followed.

The trees must be thoroughly stripped of all decorations, including baubles, tinsel and hooks. Once ‘cleaned’ in this way, the trees should be placed next to the aforementioned bins, not inside them, and will be collected and taken away on an ongoing basis by staff from the City’s Technical Services. 

“We use Christmas trees at the composting plant, both for compost itself and for wood chips. This material is subsequently used in the maintenance of the city’s green spaces. Regarding the need to remove the decorations from the tree, I would also add that there is no need to tie it up or put it in bags. It is simply a matter of placing it next to the bins for household waste,” adds Deputy Mayor Miroslav Peterka.
