A commemorative plaque dedicated to František Drtikol
Among the notable figures born in Příbram is the world-renowned Czech photographer František Drtikol. Next week, a commemorative plaque will be unveiled at Drtikol’s restored grave in the Příbram cemetery.
The town commemorates its notable natives and prominent figures in many ways. One of these is the installation of commemorative plaques, seven of which have been produced and erected since 2020. Another commemorative plaque will be dedicated to František Drtikol and will be unveiled on the anniversary of his death at Drtikol’s grave in the Příbram Cemetery.
František Drtikol was born on 3 March 1883 in Příbram and died on 13 January 1961 in Prague. Drtikol is one of the most successful Czech masters of nude photography of all time. Among other things, he is also known for his spiritual practice of Eastern teachings and is regarded as the founder of Czech Buddhism.
František Drtikol’s time in Příbram is commemorated by a memorial plaque on house number 144 on Václavské náměstí, where the artist had his first studio. Another small plaque was situated on the stone wall by Drtikol’s grave at the Příbram Cemetery, near the Chapel of the Holy Cross. A new commemorative plaque has now been installed in its place, which will be unveiled on Tuesday 13 January at 10.00.
“František Drtikol is a world-renowned figure whom we hold in high esteem here in Příbram. The Příbram gallery, established in 2000 in the Zámeček – Ernestina, also bears his name. The exhibition spaces include a permanent exhibition dedicated to the life and work of this artist. We shall commemorate the sixty-fifth anniversary of František Drtikol’s death by unveiling a commemorative plaque at his grave,” says Mayor Jan Konvalinka.
