Description of the department’s activities

Within the scope of delegated powers as set out in the relevant legislation:

• it comprehensively manages the administration of the population register, including administrative proceedings concerning applications to remove details of permanent residence,
• it comprehensively manages the administration of identity cards and travel documents,
• it comprehensively manages civil registration activities,
• verifies signatures and documents,
• maintains a register of war graves,
• deals with offences relating to the defence of the Czech Republic,
• carries out tasks relating to crisis management, civil protection and national defence,
• draws up measures for emergencies and states of emergency,
• provides supporting documentation for the preparation and updating of the crisis plan for a municipality with extended powers,
• carries out tasks relating to the protection of classified information.

Within its independent remit, it handles the following areas:

• lost property,
• local place names,
• the allocation of house numbers, registration numbers and orientation numbers,
• ceremonies and other events (welcoming new citizens),
• the establishment of units of the town’s volunteer fire brigade and fire protection services.
