Jiráskovy sady has undergone a significant transformation

After just under a year, the regeneration of Jiráskovy sady, in the area stretching from Gen. R. Tesaříka Street to Jinecká Street, has been completed. Jiráskovy sady has been open to the public again since Tuesday 9 June.

The regeneration of Jiráskovy sady is divided into several phases. The second phase, covering the area from Gen. R. Tesaříka Street to Jinecká Street, has now been completed. As part of this second phase, the water and sewerage pipes were replaced, the gutter systems were refurbished, and the street lighting was replaced and extended. New pavement surfaces have been laid throughout the area; the bus bay has been refurbished, including the installation of new shelters for passengers; and new street furniture has been installed – benches, litter bins, a drinking fountain and noticeboards – whilst historic-style fire hydrants have also been added. The upper section has also been transformed, with the car park surface resurfaced and semi-recessed waste containers installed.

The greenery has undergone a significant transformation, with newly created flowerbeds featuring 1,500 perennials, a hedge of 60 barberries, and the planting of 7 lime trees and 9 horse chestnut trees. Naturally, the lawn has been restored and is gradually turning green.

“Jiráskovy sady has taken on a completely new look; after the whole area was fenced off for almost a year, it’s worth taking a walk around to see all the new features. The new area has been significantly enlivened by flowerbeds with perennials and new seating, and it will also be brighter at night thanks to the expansion of the street lighting,” says Mayor Jan Konvalinka by way of introduction.

The work in this part of Jiráskovy sady followed on from the first phase, during which the utility networks were replaced and the surface was resurfaced in the area of the junction of Hailova, Jiráskovy sady and Gen. R. Tesaříka streets. A water feature was originally planned for this area; however, due to space constraints, the water feature – in the form of a drinking fountain – was not installed until the second phase, near the bus stops.

“As part of the works in Jiráskovy sady, we experienced significant traffic restrictions on several occasions, which meant that the utility networks were also replaced beneath the roads, both towards Pražská Street and along Gen. R. Tesaříka,” adds Mayor Konvalinka.

From Wednesday 10 June, bus services will return to their usual routes; in other words, the services that were temporarily diverted to the ‘island’ will once again stop at the bus bay.

“As well as public transport, the reconstruction also took motorists into account, with a car park being paved in the upper part of Jiráskovy sady as part of the works. Semi-recessed bins have been installed in this area, which we are using to replace standard large-capacity rubbish bins as part of the regeneration of the public space,” adds First Deputy Mayor Vladimír Karpíšek.

The second phase of the revitalisation of Jiráskovy sady was carried out by Invessales, spol. s r. o. for a total of 48,345,000 CZK including VAT. It should be noted here that the contract was awarded for a lower sum, namely CZK 7.5 million excluding VAT. The price increase was due to additional works: new structural layers were laid on the roads; a new surface of granite cobblestones was laid across the entire car park area; water mains and sewerage pipes were extended; a sewerage shaft was constructed; drinking fountains and hydrants were connected, cobblestone paving was added beneath the benches, cables for public lighting and a new row of low-level lighting were laid, protective conduits for signalling equipment were installed, a large amount of greenery was removed and subsequently replanted, and a greater number of street furniture items were installed.

“Finally, I would like to mention that the aim is to renovate the second part of Jiráskovy sady in the future, namely the section towards Pražská Street. In this area, a study was carried out in collaboration with the public to identify what changes could be made,” adds First Deputy Mayor Vladimír Karpíšek.
