Arnošt Park

park Arnoštovy sady

The Arnoštovy Gardens are situated in the vicinity of the Ernestinum mansion. They were created in 1846–47 after the castle moats had been filled in.

In the 1860s, they were extended to include the Huk-Alemann Garden in front of house number 105. They were officially named on 25 August 1932 after Arnošt of Pardubice, the first Archbishop of Prague, who, in the 14th century, converted the local wooden fortress into a stone manor house.

The oldest trees therefore date from the mid-19th century. The lime trees lining the paths are younger, having been planted around 1900. Alongside the lime trees, the crowns of maples, oaks and beeches rustle in the breeze.

By the western wall of the manor house stands a local curiosity – a European whitebeam, unusually large for its species.

The park features a memorial to the victims of the First World War, which was incorporated by the architect J. Kotěra between two ancient lime trees in 1917.

Between 2012 and 2013, all the trees in the park underwent comprehensive treatment, and new trees, shrubs and perennials were planted.
