Sádek

Location: a village approximately 7 km north of Příbram, in the immediate vicinity of the Brdy Forest (the northern edge of the village is formed by the forest).

Area of the cadastral district: 186 ha

Population: 204

The village once belonged to the Hluboš estate. The name probably derives from an orchard that existed at the time. Further development of Sádek is recorded in the 18th century. In 1876, a brick chapel with a statue of St John of Nepomuk was built on the site of the former wooden belfry. The village’s rapid growth during the Theresian era was facilitated by the development of mining in the Příbram region, which provided a livelihood for the local inhabitants. The craft of nail-making, practised on old farmsteads, also became widespread.

From the history of mining: Only scant records have survived regarding the former prospecting work near Sádek. In more recent times, prospecting resumed near Sádek in the 1960s. In 1866, the Sádek shaft was sunk, reaching a depth of 250 metres. However, the results of the mining were poor, so work was halted in 1889.

The village lies on the banks of the Drahlínský stream – a tributary of the Litavka – on the very edge of the Brdy massif, now the boundary of the Brdy military training area.
