The Holý Family House and The Blue Grape
The Holý family house and the hotel and restaurant known as Modrý hrozen, on the south side of T. G. Masaryk Square, stand on the site of Příbram’s original medieval settlement. Judging by the two-storey cellars that have been explored to date – which also contained a well with preserved older Gothic vaults – it can be inferred that these were brewhouse houses.
Traces of further structural alterations, including the arcades, are still visible on the Holý building today. These were gradually removed from this side of the square during the 1830s and 1840s. To the left stood the Modrý hrozen hotel and restaurant, built on the site of a house constructed in the Baroque style between 1680 and 1684 by the merchant Jan Jakub František Pivec, on the plots of two original Gothic buildings and on parts of the Gothic masonry. The building underwent modern alterations in 1865. The Modrý hrozen was last completely rebuilt from the ground up in 1994. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the inn was a favourite haunt of, amongst others, the musical genius Antonín Dvořák, who was often staying in nearby Vysoká u Příbramě at the time. This is commemorated by a plaque to the right of the building’s entrance. On 5 October 2005, the President of the Czech Republic, Václav Klaus, stayed here overnight during a two-day official visit to Příbram.
The building is no longer a hotel; it is now used by ČSOB.
