The Příbram Gallery has acquired original photographs by Drtikol

The František Drtikol Gallery in Příbram boasts a collection of nineteen original photographs by František Drtikol, which it has acquired.

The gallery purchased eighteen of the photographs, whilst the nineteenth, a portrait of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, was donated by the current deputy mayor. 

The Příbram gallery bears the name of the eminent photographer František Drtikol, to whom a permanent exhibition is also dedicated here. The gallery has now succeeded in adding a total of nineteen of Drtikol’s originals to its collection.

“As is often the case, it was chance – and the preparations for an exhibition of Marek Ther’s work, scheduled for 2028 – that led the gallery director to discover the photographs. The artist in question drew the director’s attention to a collection of photographs discovered in one of Prague’s antique shops, and things started to move forward,” says Deputy Mayor Miroslav Peterka by way of introduction. 

The František Drtikol Gallery commissioned an expert assessment of the discovered photographs. Professor Vladimír Birgus, a photography historian and expert on Drtikol’s work, confirmed the authenticity of the photographs. The gallery subsequently purchased eighteen of the nineteen original photographs.

“This is a pivotal moment for us. Until now, the František Drtikol Gallery had not owned a single one of his original photographs. This makes it all the more significant that we have managed to acquire such an extensive collection in one go. It is quite possible that a similar opportunity will not arise again. Visitors will be able to see the new photographs following the gallery’s refurbishment and the opening of the new František Drtikol exhibition,” says Magda Danel. 

The last photograph from the aforementioned collection – an original portrait of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk by František Drtikol – was acquired by the gallery as a donation. The photograph was purchased by Miroslav Peterka, Deputy Mayor of Příbram, with the intention of donating it to the gallery.

“When the opportunity arose to acquire original photographs for the František Drtikol Gallery, I naturally supported the idea. I purchased one of the photographs – the portrait of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk – and donated it to the Příbram gallery, where it rightfully belongs. I am delighted that our gallery now owns original photographs by Drtikol,” adds Miroslav Peterka.
