In 2012, the state-owned enterprise DIAMO launched a project to remediate and reclaim the site of the former mining and processing plant in Příbram – Březové Hory. The aim was to remedy the damage caused by many years of ore mining and processing, whilst also protecting the Litavka river, which was threatened by heavy metal pollution, particularly from zinc.
As part of the remediation, the spoil heap was modified, its slopes were stabilised and the terrain was modified so that rainwater would seep away naturally without carrying pollutants with it. The works also included the construction of a system of drainage ditches and culverts. The area was gradually reclaimed – deciduous trees, such as hornbeams, lime trees, maples and oaks, were planted here, along with new grassy areas. Thanks to these improvements, a woodland park has been created here, which now blends into the surrounding landscape and serves as a place for walks and relaxation.
