Basic information

A spouse who took the other spouse’s surname upon marriage may, within six months of the divorce decree becoming final, notify the registry office that they are reverting to their former surname, or, where applicable, that they are ceasing to use the joint surname alongside their former surname. If they miss the six-month deadline following the divorce decree becoming final, they may apply to the relevant registry office for permission to change their surname. A spouse who has resumed their former surname is both entitled and obliged to use that surname from the time the registry office that received the notification issues a confirmation to that effect. The application must be submitted to the registry office for the applicant’s place of permanent residence.

The applicant for a change of surname is the person who, upon marriage, took the surname of their spouse.
