What is meant by a child who has been beaten, abused or neglected:
Child Abuse and Neglect Syndrome (CAN syndrome – Child Abuse and Neglect) refers to the intentional or unintentional harm (physical, psychological or sexual) inflicted on a child by those around them, most commonly by their parents. It encompasses a wide range of behaviours, from severe violence and neglect to emotional abuse, which seriously impairs the child’s development and health
Key forms of CAN:
Physical abuse: Intentional violence (beating, burns), but also passive neglect of injuries.
Psychological abuse: Humiliation, threats, isolation, emotional rejection.
Sexual abuse: Any exploitation of a child for the sexual gratification of an adult or another child.
Neglect: Failure to provide for basic needs (nutrition, hygiene, clothing, healthcare, love and safety).
Warning signs and consequences:
Physical: Unexplained injuries (bruises, fractures), malnutrition, dirty clothing, untreated health problems.
Psychological: Apathy, extreme wariness, aggression, self-harm, sexually suggestive behaviour
in young children.
Solutions and help:
Failure to report or prevent the criminal offence of abuse of a person in one’s care is a criminal offence (under the Criminal Code), and this applies to all persons who credibly become aware of such circumstances. A report of suspected abuse of a person in one’s care must be made to the Czech Police or the Social and Legal Protection of Children Authority (OSPOD). Suspected child abuse, exploitation or neglect can also be reported anonymously. Child protection is provided through the OSPOD, doctors and crisis centres (e.g. the Children’s Crisis Centre, the Safety Line).
