Application for a driving licence or an extension to a driving licence

Basic information

A driving licence is authorisation to drive motor vehicles of a specific category. A driving licence should not be confused with a driving permit, which merely certifies the scope of the driving licence.

Procedure

A written application form can be obtained from the driving school (download here) where the applicant will undertake the theory and practical training required to obtain a driving licence. Once the theory and practical training have been completed, the driving school will register the applicant for the practical driving test. Upon passing the test, the applicant will receive the original application form with the test results recorded on it. The applicant must then take this application to the drivers’ register of any municipality with extended powers, where they will submit an application for the grant of a driving licence or the issue of a driving licence.

Processing time

A driving licence is granted at the same time as the driving licence card is issued; this must be issued no later than 20 days after the application is submitted.

Who is eligible to apply

The applicant must be a natural person with legal capacity and entitled to exercise rights and fulfil obligations.

Administrative fee

 An administrative fee of 200 CZK must be paid before a driving licence is issued.

Appeals

If the test is failed, it may be retaken, even multiple times, but no sooner than 5 working days and no later than 6 months from the date of the first test. No decision on the granting of a driving licence is issued; therefore, it is not possible to appeal against it.
