As of 1 January 2014, if the owner of an item does not claim it within 3 years of it being handed in, ownership of the item passes to the local authority.

Basic information

The finder shall return the lost item to the person who lost it, or to the owner, upon payment of the necessary costs and a finder’s fee. If it is not possible to determine from the circumstances to whom the item should be returned, and if the item is not considered abandoned, the finder shall report the find without undue delay to the local authority in whose area it was found, usually within three days; however, if the item was found in a public building or on public transport, the finder shall hand it over to the operator of such facilities.

The following items do not usually fall within the scope of the lost and found service:

• items that perish quickly,
• items found in the course of criminal activity,
• items that are heavily soiled, smelly, damp or mouldy (consider whether they might be waste),
• items that are visibly damaged or non-functional electronic equipment (televisions, monitors),
• items that are clearly non-functional, where the internal mechanism is damaged or entirely missing, rendering the item completely unusable,
• items left in a place designated for this purpose (municipal waste bins).

Procedure

Found items must be handed in in person at the Population Register Department of the Příbram Municipal Authority.

This procedure does not apply to

Items found in connection with criminal activity or items that have been abandoned.

Who is obliged to report or hand in a found item

A member of the public must report the find and hand over the item found. A record of the find will be drawn up.
