Restoration of the Svatohorské orchards

The Svatohorské Gardens were established over 100 years ago. They play a significant role in the character of Svatá Hora, one of the oldest and most important pilgrimage sites in the country, and are an integral part of the town’s urban landscape. The orchards offer a peaceful contrast to the bustling streets and are a popular destination for the public. The idea to restore the orchard arose from its uniqueness in terms of size and age on a national scale, as well as from efforts to address its current dilapidated state. A grant from Billa presents an opportunity for change.

At the end of 2021, Billa selected three towns in which it will contribute to the restoration of orchards. These are Most, Mikulov and also Příbram. As part of its sustainable development strategy, this retail chain is investing a total of 1,523,833 crowns in the revitalisation of the orchard at Svatá Hora.

Příbram has joined forces with the Svatohorské sady Příbram association and the Roman Catholic parish of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Příbram, and together they have drawn up a project covering a total of 2.9 hectares owned by the town and the Roman Catholic parish. The planned restoration covers the area between Balbínova, Na Leštině and K Mýtu streets and around the sports complex below Svatá Hora. Thanks to the cooperation of all parties involved, the orchard – which is an integral part of Svatá Hora – will be restored. A space will be created where residents and visitors alike can meet and relax.

In the first phase, the restoration of the orchards will primarily involve the professional pruning of existing fruit trees, the felling of non-fruit-bearing and diseased trees, the planting of new fruit trees, and the creation of a hedge around the sports complex. Funds will also be allocated to street furniture. The orchards will be equipped with new information boards, benches, litter bins and a tourist shelter near the car park. The town of Příbram will support the construction of this shelter.

The work will take a year. Felling and professional pruning of trees, as well as site preparation for planting, will begin before the end of this year. Next autumn, the revitalisation of the orchards will culminate in the planting of new trees. All work should be carried out without restricting access to the orchards.
