The Valle di Ledro mountain valley
The Valle di Ledro mountain valley is situated in northern Italy, in the province of Trento within the Trentino-Alto Adige region, in the Gardane Mountains, above the town of Riva del Garda. It is a very popular tourist destination in northern Italy, boasting stunning unspoilt natural scenery and offering a wealth of sporting, tourist and cultural activities.
Lake Ledro (Lago di Ledro) lies in the Ledro Valley. Its surface is at an altitude of 655 metres above sea level, its circumference is approximately 10 km and its greatest depth reaches 48 metres. The area around Lake Ledro and the nearby Lake Carera forms part of the local biosphere reserve, which was inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2015.
Valle di Ledro comprises a group of villages with a population of approximately 5,600. The villages wind their way along the lake up into the mountains. The first village in the Valle di Ledro, heading from the town of Riva del Garda, is Biacesa, followed by Prè, Barcesino, Molina di Ledro, Mezzolago, Pieve di Ledro, Bezzecca, Tiarno di Sotto and Tiarno di Sopra. Locca, Enguiso and Lenzumo form part of the Concei side valley, which begins in Bezzecca.
The valley is surrounded by mountain spurs, the most famous of which is the Tremalzo Pass, situated south-west of the Valle di Ledra at an altitude of 1,665 m. An important ornithological station has been established at this pass, which studies and monitors the southward migration of birds. The highest point in the area is Monte Tremalzo, at an altitude of 1,975 metres. The Tremalzo area and the Valle di Ledro are home to a large number of endemic plant species and protected animal species. Towering above the Val di Concei is the highest peak, Monte Cadria, at 2,250 metres.
The area around the lake was already inhabited during the Bronze Age; in the village of Molina di Ledro, you can see the Palafitte, pile-dwelling structures from the Bronze Age, and visit the local archaeological museum. There are also other museums worth visiting, such as the Natural History Museum, the Foletto Pharmacy Museum, the War Museum, Garibaldi’s trenches, nature reserves, waterfalls and much more.
