Restoration of a mass grave of First World War victims – Trubač

Project titleRestoration of a mass war grave for victims of the First World War – Trubač
Grant providerMinistry of Defence of the Czech Republic
Brief description of the project

The aim of the project is to restore a war mass grave containing the remains of 34 soldiers from the First World War, complete with a commemorative plaque. This work was created by the sculptor Václav Šára in 1937; it is regarded as one of the sculptor’s most significant works and is situated in the north-eastern corner of the Příbram cemetery. The war grave containing the remains is listed in the Register of War Graves for the Příbram Municipal Authority. The grave is owned by the Town of Příbram. It has not undergone any major restoration work since 1937. The statue of the bugler is neglected, covered in lichen and has a broken helmet. A plastic lantern has been added to the grave by a member of the public, and the memorial plaque bearing the names of the victims is shabby and in need of cleaning. The overall appearance and condition of the grave are unsatisfactory.
