Brief description of the project

The Příbram Svatohorská Šalmaj – a festival of music, dance, theatre and crafts – is a traditional event that has been held since 2007. In 2016, this event became part of the year-long celebrations marking 800 years since the first written mention of the town of Příbram. This year’s ninth edition of the event, traditionally held at Svatá Hora, was complemented by a further programme on T. G. Masaryk Square.

Unlike previous years, which always featured a programme on a single day, this year’s event took the form of a two-day programme – on Friday 9 September 2016, the stage was set up on T. G. Masaryk Square, and on Saturday 10 September 2016, the programme took place in the courtyard of Svatá Hora. On the first day, there were musical performances by schools from Příbram, theatre performances, a dance group and giant puppets, as well as a fire show. Alongside traditional performances by the Svatá Hora Trumpeters’ Ensemble and Ginevra, on Friday the audience were treated to new attractions such as video mapping. On Friday, the event ran from 11:00 to 23:00.

On Saturday 10 September 2016, the courtyard of Svatá Hora hosted the traditional programme comprising theatre, music and juggling performances, as well as demonstrations of period dances and fencing. The programme on this day ran from 10.00 am to 11.00 pm. Within the grounds, visitors could explore a market featuring demonstrations of traditional crafts. A historical procession set off from the town centre on Saturday, and transport was provided throughout the day between T. G. Masaryk Square and Svatá Hora.

On both days, there was also a rich supporting programme, including period attractions, a display of birds of prey, crossbow shooting, carriage rides, refreshments of all kinds, medieval games and the Firefighters’ Run up the Svatohorské Stairs. The full programme for the entire event is attached to this report.

Ginevra music o.s. was responsible for organising the event under a contractual agreement with the town of Příbram. Promotional materials such as leaflets, posters, billboards, etc. were produced for the event; the logo of the Central Bohemian Region was featured on all these materials. Throughout the event, it was clearly indicated that the event was organised with the support of the Central Bohemian Region (see appendices).

The event was fully funded from the budget of the town of Příbram, with its revenue consisting of admission fees collected (the price of a single ticket was 70 CZK). Admission fees were collected only on Saturday.

On the Friday of the event, an estimated 1,500–2,000 spectators attended T. G. Masaryk Square. On Saturday, 2,419 paying spectators attended the event in the courtyard of Svatá Hora; when visitors in fancy dress and children, who were admitted free of charge, are also included, the organisers estimated the total number of attendees on Saturday to be around 3,000. Over the two days, attendance totalled around 5,000 visitors.
